§ What Nobody Tells You

1. Cannabis Laws Changed in April 2026

As of April 29, 2026, recreational cannabis use is illegal. Public smoking carries a 25,000 THB fine (~$730) and/or 3 months in jail. Dispensaries may still be open but buying or smoking in public is illegal.

2. Bang Tao Is Not the Thailand You Imagined

Over 1.1 million Russian visitors in 2025 transformed Bang Tao. Cyrillic signs, Russian restaurants are now common. Property prices rose 300%+ in two years. For authentic Thai culture, Kamala offers more.

3. The Real Thailand Is 20 Minutes North

Natai Beach and Thai Mueang — 30-40 minutes north of the airport — offer empty beaches, cheaper prices, and a Phuket that feels like 15 years ago.

Scams

Jet ski damage scam (always photograph before riding), taxi overcharging, gem shop tours, "closed today" scam.

Rip Currents

Kills tourists every year, particularly May-October. Red flag = no swimming, no exceptions.

Traffic

Road accidents are a leading cause of tourist injury. Wear helmet, no night riding, no riding in rain.

Heat

32-34°C year-round. Carry water, plan outdoor activity for morning or late afternoon.

Tap Water

Not safe anywhere in Phuket. Bottled water is cheap and everywhere.

Use Grab or Bolt. Typical fares: 100–1,000 THB (~$3–30). Some drivers request cash top-ups — decline and rebook. Taxi mafia: traditional taxis are expensive and often refuse meters. Motorbikes require IDP — without it, your travel insurance is void.

Bangkok Hospital Phuket — best equipped, English-speaking, but most expensive. Mission Hospital Phuket — solid mid-range option, much more affordable for minor issues. No mandatory vaccinations for most nationalities, but Hepatitis A and Typhoid recommended.
